The first-ever gathering to launch our group!
un·con·fer·ence ˈənkänf(ə)rəns/ (noun)
a loosely structured conference emphasizing the informal exchange of information and ideas between participants, rather than following a conventionally structured program of events
Saturday, January 30th, 2016
Arizona School for the Arts
10:00 am-1:00 pm
$10 pre-registration | $12 at the door
Our first event will be formatted as an Unconference so that we may solicit ideas from the local community to steer our organization. We hope you will join us, and come prepared to share your views on the following:
- The nature of scientific and mathematical thinking: The nature of STEM in practice vs. the nature of STEM in the legislature vs. the nature of STEM in education: Is there a mismatch?
- Sharing our present: How do Arizona educators approach the nature of STEM in their classrooms? How do each of us support our students as they progress from concrete to abstract reasoning? What does the typical science or mathematics classroom look like (or is there such a thing as typical)?
- Planning our future: What topics should subsequent meetings address? What ideas can we share? How can we leverage our alliance to better meet the needs of our students? How can we strengthen our voice in the community?
We are a subsidiary of the American Modeling Teachers Association, a 501(c) non-profit organization dedicated to creating quality professional development opportunities for teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We welcome and encourage teacher attendees from across the Phoenix area, the state of Arizona, and the US. We are inspired by STEMteachersNYC.
