About the event
This workshop will immerse participants in the Modeling Method of Instruction, a research-based pedagogy that strives to teach students to do math and learn as mathematicians do. During the workshop, participants will use resources developed to support the pedagogy and engage in learning as their students would.
All participants will be given access to a complete set of instructional materials (including teacher notes and student activity sheets) for a unit on ratios and proportional reasoning. Activities will focus on middle school mathematics standards, and will be appropriate for (and easily adjustable to) grade levels ranging from elementary to high school. The overarching goal of the unit is to help students build a rich model of what it means to reason proportionally. Ultimately, this model will include a set of interconnected representations for ratios and proportions that go deeper than simply learning a set of mathematical skills.

This workshop will meet Monday-Thursday for a total of 30 hours of professional development. Participants in this workshop will receive a one-year membership to the American Modeling Teachers Association.
