About the event

This workshop is a chance to learn (more) about PhET Interactive Simulations’ free resources and pedagogies to teach mathematics and science. The workshop will be helpful both to those who have used PhET for some time as well as to those who have never used PhET simulations before.

PhET’s resources can support teachers, particularly in cases where teachers and students have limited physical laboratory equipment or manipulatives. Additionally, PhET’s simple pedagogies can support teachers to effectively engage large classes and promote student-centered, active learning. When used with inquiry approaches, PhET simulations have been demonstrated to increase student conceptual understanding, engagement, and interest in math and science (see Banda & Nzabahimana for a global literature review).

Who is eligible to participate?
  • Grades 5-12 math and science teachers (and those who support grades 5-12 instruction). PhET’s resources cover a wide span of content and topic areas, with emphasis on physical science (physics, chemistry, Earth/space) and mathematics (fractions, equalities, functions, etc.). Please consider browsing these resources to determine relevance to the content you teach..
  • Participants should have access to an email account, laptop computer, and Google Drive or Microsoft Office (or a compatible word editing and presentation software).
Why should I participate?
  • Professional growth: Improve your pedagogical practice with PhET sims to improve teaching and learning in your own classroom.
  • Community: Connect with highly-motivated mathematics and science teachers across the state.
  • Recognition: Receive a certificate for your efforts.
