STEM: Bridging Math and Science through Proportional Reasoning
Mon, Jun 17
|ASU Tempe, PSH 362
This workshop will focus on mathematics standards addressing ratios and proportional reasoning. Participants will be immersed in the Modeling Method of Instruction, a research-based pedagogy that strives to teach students to do math and learn as mathematicians do.

About the event
Leaders: Christel Bruno (STEM Specialist), Tracy Ryan (Middle School Math Specialist), and Kelli Warble (Math and Physics Modeling Workshop Leader) This workshop will meet 8:00 am-3:30 pm daily with a 1 hour lunch break for a total of 30 professional development hours. Parking passes will be available. (Modeling Workshops in physics and chemistry will be occurring simultaneously at the same site, as will the AMTA Summer Conference!)
During this workshop, we will take a deep-dive into student development of proportional reasoning, critical to mastering concepts in fields ranging from science to engineering. A unit of classroom instructional materials that aid students in building a rich model of what it means to reason proportionally will be shared.
Since proportional reasoning crosses grade levels and content areas, this workshop is appropriate for teachers from all STEM fields and a variety of grade levels. Activities shared will begin with the foundational development of the ratio concept (late elementary to middle school grades) and span into increasingly sophisticated use of proportional reasoning (applicable to high school and early college).
What is Modeling Instruction? Watch this video or learn more about Modeling Instruction at https://www.modelinginstruction.org/ Participants in this workshop will receive a one-year membership to the American Modeling Teachers Association.
